We will do the work in a way that suits you.  I customize my approach to each client.  I use evidence-based therapies that have been shown to be effective.  Depending on what we are working on, I will adapt High Performance rehearsal techniques, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction techniques, Strengths-Based, Solution Focused methods, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Internal Family Systems, Psychosynthesis, or Trauma Reprocessing / Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).  Whatever works best for you, we will do (provided it is helpful and appropriate, of course).
For some clients, it helps to shut out all their concerns until they are able to talk with me during their weekly session. Others work on issues throughout the week. Some request coping skills, others want worksheets or homework.  Many want book recommendations. You get to choose.
The length of time we spend in therapy / counseling is up to you. If you are new to therapy / counseling, I like to define a chunk of work we want to complete, plan 12 sessions to get it done, re-evaluate as we go, and at the 10-week mark, start to wrap up or decide if there is more work you would like to do with me.
We break down topics you want to focus on to a manageable size.  Usually, therapy / counseling addresses problems that have developed over a lifetime.  You are totally worth devoting three months to working on your issues with me.  By the end of 10 weeks, one client who had never been in counseling before said they felt like they were no longer living in a pressure cooker.
Over 12 weeks, you begin the healing process.  You recognize what triggers anxiety and start to transform.  The despair lifts.  You learn techniques to deal with stress, gain new insights to apply to your life, put panic management methods in place.
For some past clients it took six months of face-to-face therapy to learn they could manage panic attacks in all circumstances; they no longer worried they were going to have a panic attack or a heart attack.  They went on to successfully manage high stress jobs, 60-hour work weeks, or difficult teenagers…
